KL Polo Classic 2023

The Kuala Lumpur Polo Club will be holding the 6-goal KL POLO CLASSIC, to be played from Saturday 10th to Sunday 18th June 2023.

Handicap: Teams of 2 to 6 Goals.

Games: 4 Chukkas.

There shall be no handicap restriction on professional players, however teams must maintain at least one amateur player on the field at all times.

31 May – Close for Early Bird Entries at RM6,000 per team

8th June – Technical Briefing and Draw.

KL Polo Classic 2023

  1. TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE

1.1        The League Committee shall comprise

  1. Polo Captain (chair)
  2. Polo Sub-Committee Members

1.2        The Chairman shall have the power to invite further representatives from other teams that are participating to attend Tournament Committee meetings.

2.3        The Polo Captain shall be in charge of the day-to-day running of the league and shall keep track and publish all results and of all league matches and tournaments played and from time to time publish league standings, or shall appoint a tournament director.

  1. HANDICAPS

3.1        The Low Goal League shall be played within the range of 2 to 6 Goals

  1. DATES OF TOURNAMENTS

The dates of the tournaments are from 10th to 18th June 2023

  1. RULES

5.1        All leagues are to be played under current Hurlingham Polo Association Rules, except where specifically modified in these regulations.

5.2        Umpire(s) shall be appointed by the League Committee.

5.3        All games shall be played with two umpires and with a referee officiating unless agreed by the Polo Captain.

5.4        All players participating must have passed an RMPA or KLPC Rules Test before he can be registered as eligible to play. 

5.5        Players who are in default with KLPC may not participate in any Tournaments till their account has been cleared in full and permission to participate has been granted by the League Committee.

5.6        Elbow Guards and safety eyewear are mandatory for players 23 years of age and under.

5.7        Matches shall be played over four chukkas.

5.8        Matches shall be played on handicap. 

5.9        There is no maximum number of horses that can be played. 

5.10      Teams shall be responsible for their own stabling, floating and incidental costs.

5.11      No draws are allowed.

5.12      All qualifying league matches must be played till there is a winner.  Drawn games must be played till there is a winner, first with a supplementary chukka.  First goal (Golden Goal) decides the winner of the match.   If there is no goal in the supplementary chukka, penalties will be taken to decide the winner of the match.  The penalty shoot-out to decide the outcome of games shall be as follows:

  1. Each player takes one penalty at 30 yards and 40 yards each.
  2. If scores are tied, the shoot-out goes into sudden-death at 60 yards
  3. Teams may not change the sequence of penalty takers.
  4. Teams may not substitute players during a penalty shoot-out.
  5. Players may not change horses once the penalty shoot-out has begun, unless a horse goes lame (to be decided by the umpires).

5.13      Matches that are abandoned because of the weather shall be considered completed if more than half of the match was played with the score recorded as final when the match was stopped.

5.14      Teams tied on points shall be separated by the who-beat-who rule, with the winner of their match together going above the loser in that zone and/or league.

5.15      In the event that the who-beat-who rule cannot be applied to define an order of merit, goal difference shall be used, and if that is tied, then goal difference will be recalculated without handicap goals.

  1. Qualifying Points & Order of Merit

6.1        Qualifying Points are awarded per game on the scale as follows:

  1. Three (3) points for an outright game win in regulation time.
  2. Two (2) points for a win in sudden death over-time (drawn in regulation time).
  3. One (1) point for a loss in sudden death over-time (drawn in regulation time).
  4. No points for an outright loss in regulation time.

6.2        In the event of a tie for points in the qualifying league, the ‘who beat who’ rule shall be applied, looking at the last game played between the two teams tournament.

  1. Handicap Committee & Handicapping

7.1        Any player participating in the KL Polo Classic shall play off their current RMPA Handicap.

7.2        In the event that a player coming from abroad to play in the KLPC league does not hold an RMPA or KLPC Handicap, this player shall play off the highest handicap currently allotted to him by his home country, Hurlingham Polo Association, US Polo Association or Argentine Association of Polo.  

7.3        In the event that the player holds a higher handicap anywhere else in the world, he shall play off his home/HPA/USPA/AAP handicap on a temporary basis (T Handicap) till his handicap is reviewed by the League Committee.

  1. General

8.1      The Tournament Committee shall have the right to make any over-riding

decisions in the interest of completing their tournaments, should these rules not refer to an explicit situation.

8.2        These regulations are set out to provide a structure for the KL Polo Classic to run in accordance of H.P.A. Rules.

8.3        KLPC reserves the right to alter, modify or change any regulations at any time.

KLPC Low Goal League 1 Tournament

There are five teams entered for the KLPC Low Goal League Tournament #1, to be played at the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club, from Saturday 6th to Sunday 14th May, 2023.

KLPC Low Goal League Regulations

1. LOW GOAL LEAGUE

The LOW GOAL LEAGUE is a polo league organized and run by the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club.  It shall comprise of two tournaments this season.

2. LEAGUE COMMITTEE

2.1        The League Committee shall comprise

  1. Polo Captain (chair)
  2. Polo Sub-Committee Members

2.2        The Chairman shall have the power to invite further representatives from other teams that are participating in the Low Goal League to attend League Committee meetings.

2.3        The Polo Captain shall be in charge of the day-to-day running of the league and shall keep track and publish all results and of all league matches and tournaments played and from time to time publish league standings.

3. HANDICAPS

3.1        The Low Goal League shall be played within the range of -2 to 2 Goals

3.2        The maximum handicap of any player shall be 2 goals.

  1. DATES OF TOURNAMENTS

              The dates of the tournaments are as follows:

  1. 6th to 14th May 2023
  2. 24th to 29th October 2023 (adjusted)

Or as adjusted by the Polo Sub-Committee.

5. ENTRIES & DECLARATIONS

5.1        The 2022 Low Goal League shall be limited to a maximum of ten (10) teams, and may be extended beyond this total only with the permission of the League Committee.

5.2        Entries shall be submitted using the official entry form, and submitted to the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club by:      

  •               Low Goal League 1      Friday 28th April 2023
  •               Low Goal League 2     Tuesday 11th October 2023

5.3        The entry fee structure for the tournaments will be:

  1. One League Tournament only               RM6,800
  2. Both League Tournaments                     RM11,000

5.4        If an Entry for the first Low Goal League 1 is confirmed by Friday 14th April, the entry fees shall be reduced to RM6,000 for a single entry, or RM10,000 for an entry into both league tournaments.

5.5        Entries are accepted at the discretion of the League Committee.  No reasons shall be given for non-acceptance.

5.6        There shall be no refunds on tournament entry fees.

5.7        Team Declarations shall be required by the Polo Captain by the following dates:

  • Low Goal League 1     Saturday 29th April 2023
  • Low Goal League 2     Saturday 21st October 22023

5.8        Teams that submit their declaration late for any tournament shall be subject to a fine of RM500.

5.9        Teams may register a maximum of seven players for each tournament.

5.10      All players in a team may be changed from tournament to tournament.

5.11      Teams may not have more than one professional player on the field at any time.

5.12      A Team Captain must be nominated at the time of declaration. The Team Captain (or Team Manager), in addition to being responsible for the conduct of his team, shall be responsible for attending all meetings and briefings.

5.13      Teams whose total handicap does not reach the minimum shall seek permission from the League Committee to play in the tournament.  In the event that they are allowed to play, the team shall play off the minimum handicap, with one or more players designated to “carry” the handicap difference.

5.14      A draw for playing order, if applicable, shall take place as follows:

  • Low Goal League 1     Saturday 29th April 2023
  • Low Goal League 2     Saturday 21st October 2023

6. Formats and Order of Play

6.12      The League Committee shall devise a format of play that will be used at League Tournaments, depending on the number of entries.

6.13      The League Committee shall have the discretion to change the format of play even after the tournament has started, if the tournament is affected by the weather.

6.14      No draws are allowed, except in final order of merit round-robin matches.

6.15      All qualifying league matches must be played till there is a winner.  Drawn games must be played till there is a winner, first with a supplementary chukka.  First goal (Golden Goal) decides the winner of the match.   If there is no goal in the supplementary chukka, penalties will be taken to decide the winner of the match.  The penalty shoot-out to decide the outcome of games shall be as follows:

7. League Points & Order of Merit

7.2        At each tournament teams are awarded bonus points based on the order of merit, as follows:

  1. Champion 6 points
  2. 2nd place 4 points
  3. 3rd place 3 points
  4. 4th place 2 points
  5. 5th place 1 point
  6. 6th place onwards 0 points

7.3        All points and bonus earned in matches will be counted as league points, accumulating from tournament to tournament.

7.4        League Points shall be used to determine the final league standings.  The team with the most points at the season shall be declared the League winner.

7.5        In the event of a tie for points in the league standings:

7.5.1     The higher placed team shall be the team that wins the greater number of tournaments. 

7.5.2     Should 7.5.2 not break the deadlock, the ‘who beat who’ rule shall be applied, looking at the last game played between the two teams in the league.

7.6        Teams wishing to change names from tournament to tournament shall pay a fee of RM500 per name change.

7.7        Teams may not share league points with other teams.

8. Handicap Committee & Handicapping

8.1       Players playing in the current KLPC Low Goal League Tournament: Applicable Handicaps. The Tournament Organizing Committee has decided that if a player does not have a RMPA handicap, only then shall the KLPC club handicap apply. Once RMPA has handicapped a player, the player shall play off their current RMPA handicap.

8.2        In the event that a player coming from abroad to play in the KLPC league does not hold an RMPA or KLPC Handicap, this player shall play off the highest handicap currently allotted to him by his home country, Hurlingham Polo Association, US Polo Association or Argentine Association of Polo.  

8.3        In the event that the player holds a higher handicap anywhere else in the world, he shall play off his home/HPA/USPA/AAP handicap on a temporary basis (T Handicap) till his handicap is reviewed by the League Committee.

8.4        KLPC reserves the right to re-handicap any new players on a temporary basis.

9. Sponsorships

9.1        KLPC reserves the right to seek sponsors for the The Low Goal League

9.2        KLPC reserves the right to display a League Sponsor’s logo on the upper right hand side of all participating team’s playing jerseys.

9.3        Teams may seek team sponsorships from companies that are not in competition to the main sponsor.

10. General

10.1      The League Committee shall have the right to make any over-riding

decisions in the interest of completing their tournaments, should these rules not refer to an explicit situation, and providing the spirit of The Low Goal League rules are not compromised.

10.2      These regulations are set out to provide a structure for the The Low Goal League to run in accordance of H.P.A. Rules.

10.3      KLPC reserves the right to alter, modify or change any regulations at any time.
